Options for future harbour crossings
Project Stage
2. Initiated
Project has started and is in the early stages of development.
About the Project
The demand for the movement of people and goods to cross the Halifax Harbour is expected to increase in the future. With only five primary ways on and off the Halifax peninsula, options for additional harbour crossings may be needed but must be fully explored and understood.
FROM THE REGIONAL TRANSPORTATION PLAN
Action 3.1.4: Study options for increasing future multi-modal capacity across the Halifax Harbour.
The demand for the movement of people and goods to cross the Halifax Harbour is expected to increase in the future. Actions under the Strengthen Regional Connections goal will help meet part of this demand; however, additional capacity may be needed. Examples include:
- Examining the feasibility and potential location of a third crossing between Dartmouth and the Halifax Peninsula,
- An active transportation facility crossing the Northwest Arm, or
- A truck barge to support regional goods movement.
